Julia Oliveira, Sara Quevedo Announced as Eligible for NWSL Draft

Two Chicago State soccer stars on NWSL's draft list

CHICAGO — Julia Oliveira and Sara Quevedo, two of Chicago State's top women's soccer stars over the last few seasons, were announced as eligible for the National Women's Soccer League Draft.

America's premiere women's soccer league, the NWSL was founded in 2012 and features 10 teams, including the Chicago Red Stars, who play at Bridgeview's SeatGeek Stadium, where Chicago State has played for two seasons. The NWSL Draft will take place on Saturday, December 18 at 1:00 p.m. in Los Angeles.

Quevedo came to Chicago State after earning First-Team All-America honors at ASA College in Brooklyn, New York. She scored one goal and logged over 1,000 minutes in her first season. After garnering a spot on Preseason All-Western Athletic Conference Team, she then scored another goal in the 2021 season opener at Northern Illinois. Quevedo hails from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

Oliveira, a Canoas, Brazil native, joined CSU from Iowa Central Community College, where she scored 13 goals. In her two Chicago State seasons, Oliveira scored onoe goal and logged seven shots on goal, earning a reputation as the Cougars' "scrapper."

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title and made an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).  The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet.
