Women’s Soccer Posts First Shutout Victory with 1-0 Win at Saint Xavier

Senior Sara Marcotte tallied her first goal of the season in the 49th minute as CSU won at Saint Xavier today, 1-0.

CHICAGO – The Chicago State women's soccer team produced its first shutout win in program history this evening after defeating host Saint Xavier, 1-0, in a "Battle of the Cougars" at SXU's Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.

The win also marked the first road victory for CSU since its inaugural season in 2014 and the first under new head coach Kevin Meek while snapping a 16-game losing streak dating back to last season.

Chicago State dominated both sides of the ball in the first half as it produced a 9-0 advantage in shots and had several opportunities to score, but SXU held serve as the game went into intermission as a scoreless tie.

The Green and White kept up the offensive pressure early in the second half and hit pay dirt in the 49th minute when senior Sara Marcotte (Republic, Mo./Republic) tallied her first goal of the season after receiving a pass from sophomore Mariela Alba (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett) then booted a shot past Saint Xavier goalkeeper Carly Bledsoe from 20 yards out to the back of the net. CSU then held serve for the rest of the half to capture the win.

Junior goalkeeper Audra Wisehart (Sandusky, Ohio/Huron), making her first start of the season in goal, tallied two saves in producing her first collegiate shutout victory for the CSU Cougars. Freshman Jensyn Stanberry (Grand Haven, Mich./Fruitport) recorded five shot attempts, and Marcotte finished with four shot attempts with three of those on goal.

CSU (1-2) continues its nine-game road swing in Buies Creek, N.C., on Sunday for a non-conference showdown at Campbell beginning at 2 p.m., Central Time.
