Women’s Soccer Breaks 30-Game Losing Streak with 3-2 Win over St. Xavier

CHICAGO – Sophomore Alejandra Alonso (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) tallied two assists in helping host Chicago State snap a 30-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon after it captured a 3-2 victory over St. Xavier in the "Battle of the Cougars" today at Kroc Stadium.

The home team took an early 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when Alonso sent a one-time pass from the middle of the infield to freshman Mariela Alba (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett), who would knock a quick shot past SXU goalkeeper Alex Perry for her second tally of the season.

CSU increased its leading margin to 2-0 in the 53rd minute after sophomore Amber Jones (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute Country Day) headed in a free kick from redshirt sophomore Jordyn Stanberry (Grand Haven, Mich./Fruitport) before SXU pulled within 2-1 on a Christina Sperando goal just two minutes later.

Freshman Taylor Rankin (Dearborn, Mich./Ford) scored her first collegiate goal off in the 87th minute another Alonso pass to hike the Green and White's advantage to 3-1. Sperando closed out the scoring two minutes later on a penalty kick for the final margin.

Rankin recorded a match-best six shot attempts with three shots on goal to pace the Cougars (1-2), while junior Gabby Klemp (Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) recorded three saves to earn her first collegiate victory in goal.

Sperando finished with five shot attempts and Perry notched a game-high 13 saves for SXU (0-1).

Chicago State concludes its three-game homestand on Friday, Sept. 2 against Eastern Illinois with a start time of 3 p.m.
