Baseball Drops 6-2 Non-Conference Decision at Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – Chicago State baseball dropped a 6-2 decision to host Milwaukee in a non-conference contest here this afternoon.

The Green and White opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to an RBI groundout by senior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake Ill./Central) which brought home sophomore Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) for a 1-0 lead, but UWM tallied three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 advantage.

Ian Ross lined a double to right center that scored two runs in the sixth inning to increase the home team's leading margin to 5-1 and the Panthers added another run in the seventh for a 6-1 lead.

CSU scored again in the eighth inning without recording a hit as senior David Wright (Desoto, Texas/Desoto) drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded that plated junior Rick Salazar (Bloomindale, Ill./McHenry) from third for the final margin.

Freund went 2-for-5 at the plate to pace the Cougars (10-35) on the offensive end. Junior Thomas Caulfield (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) allowed three runs on four hits in an inning thrown to take the loss in his first pitching start in a CSU uniform.

UWM was led by Ross, who finished hitting 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while John Boidanis also hit 2-for-4 with a double. Austin Schulfer (2-3) recorded seven strikeouts and walked three over six innings to earn the win for the home team.

CSU makes its return to Cougar Stadium for a four-game homestand beginning Friday evening with a Western Athletic Conference contest against North Dakota beginning at 6 p.m.
