Baseball Closes Weekend Series at Grand Canyon with 10-5 Loss

PHOENIX – Chicago State baseball closed out its weekend Western Athletic Conference series with a 10-5 loss to host Grand Canyon here Sunday at Brazell Stadium.

The Green and White opened the scoring in the top of the first with an early 2-0 lead on a double from junior Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) which scored senior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake Ill./Central) and sophomore Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) before GCU scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning to slice its deficit at 2-1.

The home team then scored four runs in the second to go along with a run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 7-2 advantage.

CSU pulled within 7-3 in the top of the fifth inning when senior Chris Hipchen (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) plated fellow classmate David Wright (Desoto, Texas/Desoto) with an RBI fielder's choice. The Antelopes responded with another run in the bottom of the fifth to hike their leading margin to 8-3.

Grand Canyon scored two additional runs in the sixth which increased its lead to 10-3 before junior Rick Salazar (Bloomindale, Ill./McHenry) lined a two-run double that brought home Gertonson and freshman Cody Grosse (Joliet, Ill./West) in the eighth to conclude the scoring.

The Cougars were led on the offensive end by junior Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) as he hit 2-for-4 with a double. Junior Josh Willis (Omaha, Neb.) took the loss after giving up six runs (three earned) on six hits over two innings of work

Thomas Lerouge went 3-for-5 at the plate for GCU, while Tyler Wyatt (2-3) allowed three runs on four hits in five innings thrown to earn the win in addition to batting 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

CSU returns to action with a mid-week road contest Tuesday afternoon at Milwaukee with a start time of 3 p.m.
