Freund Goes 3-for-4 in CSU’s 11-4 Loss at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Sophomore Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Chicago State baseball team Friday night in its 11-4 loss at New Mexico State in a Western Athletic Conference contest at Presley Askew Field.
 
CSU captured an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning after Freund lined an RBI single to center field to bring home freshman Cody Grosse (Joliet, Ill./West) from second base, but NMSU evened the score in the bottom half of the inning after Austin Botello hit an RBI single.
 
Junior Rick Salazar (Bloomindale, Ill./McHenry) hit a solo home run to left field and redshirt junior Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) lined an RBI single that scored sophomore Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West ) in the top of the second to help the Green and White regain the lead at 3-1. L.J. Hatch closed the Aggies deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the second after hitting an RBI sacrifice fly to right field.
 
The home team went on a tear by scoring nine runs between the third and eighth inning to take an 11-3 lead.
 
Freund struck again in the ninth as he hit an RBI single up the middle which scored senior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake Ill./Central), who singled two plays earlier, from second base for the final margin.
 
Thomas hit 2-for-4 at the plate for CSU (5-15, 0-2), while Russell and junior Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) each recorded a double. Junior Justin Wyant (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) gave up seven runs on 11 hits in six innings of work while striking out three batters and walking four to take the loss.
 
NMSU (14-10, 2-0) was led by Hatch as he hit 3-for-5 with five RBI and scored two runs. Kyle Bradish recorded seven strikeouts and walked five to earn the win despite allowing three runs on six hits in six innings thrown.
 
The series finale from Askew Field will be on Saturday at 11 a.m., Mountain Time (12 p.m, Central Time).
