CSU Baseball Wins Third Game in a Row after Edging Host Hawai’I, 1-0

HONOLULU – The Chicago State baseball captured its third consecutive victory here late Thursday night after edging host Hawai'i by a score of 1-0 in the opener of a four-game series between the two teams at Les Murakami Stadium.
 
Chicago State baseball opened its 2016 home schedule at Cougar Stadium Saturday in grand fashion by posting a doubleheader sweep of rival UIC by winning 6-3 in the first game and later capturing a 3-1 decision in the second contest.
 
Most of the game scoreless as the starting pitchers for both teams – CSU's Jake Perkins (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) and UH's Brandon Hornung – recorded strikeouts and held offenses in check for over seven innings.
 
The Cougars (5-10) got on the board in the ninth inning when redshirt junior Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) reached base on a throwing error and advanced to second on a single from sophomore Matt Sullivan (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Huntley) before scoring on an RBI single through the left side by senior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake Ill./Central).
 
The Rainbow Warriors (6-12) looked to tie the score in the bottom half of the inning, but were shut down on the mound by sophomore Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West ) to seal the win.
 
Gertonson went 2-for-4 and drove in a run to lead CSU at the plate. Thomas improved his season record to 2-0 after throwing two scoreless innings without allowing a hit while posting two strikeouts. Perkins scattered only two hits in seven innings of work and posted eight strikeouts for the Green and White.
 
UH was led by Josh Rojas as he hit 1-for-2 at the plate, while Hornung also recorded eight strikeouts but allowed a run (unearned) on five hits in 8.1 innings thrown to take the loss.
 
Both teams will meet for the second game of this weekend's series late Friday night with a start time of 6:35 p.m., Hawaiian Time (11:35 p.m., Central Time).
