The Cougar Pen - Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of the Cougar Pen and now let's go to Dillon Engle!

We are getting ready to open up the season here just next week. We have been chomping at the bit to get on the plane and head off to Corpus Christi and get this first weekend started.  With that being said, Cody and I will introduce the remaining six players on the Cougars on the roster for this season.

No. 14, Quinn Ahern (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West), is junior right-handed pitcher from Joliet. Quinn transferred in from North Iowa Area Community College, where he put up really good numbers for two years. He is a pretty quiet person, but once you get to know him he opens up. He's one of those subtly funny guys and he kind of just does it without trying. Unfortunately, Quinn had Tommy John surgery in the fall and will not be able to pitch for us this season. He will be taking a redshirt year and is coming back next year again as a junior. Expect Quinn to come back strong from his surgery and produce for the Cougars in 2017.

No. 13, Jamary McKinney (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) is a freshman right-handed pitcher from Chicago. Jamary is one of those guys that can really make you laugh. You see him doing all these dances and having fun out on the field and it is just awesome to see. He also has a perfect "big-dog" bark, for what reason I have no idea, but it is pretty funny. Jamary also has a lot of potential and talent. He has been working really hard to get ready to make his debut for the Cougars. Jamary is going to be a huge piece of the bullpen this year so continue to look for big things from this guy.

No. 23, Griffin McGuire (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West), is another freshman right-handed pitcher that also hails from Joliet.  Griffin also has a lot of nicknames, "Griff, Spiff, Spiffy, Spiffy Griff," but that is not what he is most known for by this team by. Griff has strong political beliefs and doesn't let us hear the end of it. If you are looking for the latest on Presidential Campaigns, just go and check out Griff's Twitter. Unfortunately, Griffin, like Quinn, is also rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and will not be able to pitch for us this year. He will also be taking a medical redshirt and will coming back next year as a freshman ready to go for the Cougars.

No. 11, Malachi Ferrell (Chicago, Ill./DeVry Advantage Academy), is a sophomore outfielder from Chicago. Malachi came to us in fall and wowed us with his speed. He does make sure he gets his work in in the weight room. Most of the time before we practice, you will see Malachi walking into the locker room rapping the song that he is currently listening to. He is like a little D-Wright (David Wright (Desoto, Texas/Desoto)) in that remark. We are looking for Malachi to continue to progress and get better to help us out this year… and for years to come.

Next up, Cody is going to introduce our last two players here to complete the introductions of the team.

First up is freshman, No. 6, Jeremy Cole (Rockford, Ill./East) from Rockford, Ill. He is a criminal justice major and is known to the guys as J-Cole Life, because of his twitter name. Jeremy brings a lot to the table for the Cougars this year. He came in as a middle infield guy and a very good one at that.  Once he got here, he made a transition to the outfield where he has adapted well. I actually hosted J-Cole on his recruiting visit last year before he committed. Jeremy got a taste of what it was like to be a Cougar and committed shortly after. We like to mess around with him a lot at practice, but we are definitely excited to have him here because of all the versatility he brings to this team. Jeremy is another freshman who will play a big role for us the next four years.

Our last player to introduce is freshman No. 10, Cody Grosse (Joliet, Ill./West).  Cody, along with Zack and Spiff (Griffin), is from Joliet, Ill., and is also a criminal justice major. Cody comes into the spring with some high expectations after a fantastic fall. He made an impact here immediately in the field, on the bases, at the plate, everywhere. He is a middle infielder with some exceptional range in the field. I would definitely say that he earned a lot of respect from the guys here with how hard he has worked all year and how hard he plays. He is one of the quieter guys on the team. I don't know if I've actually heard him say more than 10 words in the last eight months.  Cody, like Jake Perkins (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) and Thomas Caulfield (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame), is a gym rat. He and Griffin are always in there pushing each other to the limit. Like I said earlier, Cody has high expectations from people around him for this spring. He was named by D1baseball.com as one of the top impact freshmen of the WAC. We all know Cody is not going to worry about what others have to say and he will continue to work hard, and make an impact this spring. We're excited to have him here!
