EVANSTON, Ill. –  The Northwestern Wildcats scored two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Chicago State baseball team 7-6 on Wednesday (April 23) afternoon at Rocky Miller Park.

Junior Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) got the scoring started for the Cougars with a RBI single in the first inning.  Junior Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) put down a safety squeeze that turned into a RBI single in the second which gave Chicago State a 2-0 advantage.

Starting pitcher junior Dane Mehring (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) allowed just three runners through the first three innings before getting into trouble in the fourth. With two out and two runners on, Northwestern's Jake Schieber tripled to left center to tie the game at two.

The score was still tied at two in the sixth inning when the Cougars loaded the bases with two outs. Freshman Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) appeared to fly out to right, but catcher's interference was called which gave CSU a 3-2 lead. Junior Matt Schmidt (Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) followed with a two-run single to make it 5-2.

Schmidt led CSU with three hits and two RBI. He has seven RBI in his last three games.

In the bottom of the sixth, the first four Wildcats reached base including a RBI single by Scott Heelan. Mehring slowed the rally when he got a 3-6-3 double play, but the Big Ten foe added their fourth run on a wild pitch.

Mehring got a no decision, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings.

Northwestern tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as Matt Hofner hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

In the next inning, sophomore Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) led off with a single and advanced to third on an error by the pitcher Reid Hunter. Two batters later, junior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) hit a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars a 6-5 lead.

In home half of the ninth, pinch-hitter Luke Dauch led off with a walk then went to second on a sacrifice bunt. The next hitter Nick Linne singled home Dauch and advanced to second base on the throw home. Pinch-hitter Jack Mitchell followed with another single to left that scored Linne to win the game for Northwestern.
