PHOENIX, Ariz. - Chicago State baseball fell at Grand Canyon 15-5 (7 innings) in a Western Athletic Conference contest Sunday (March 30) afternoon.

Just as they did on Saturday, the Cougars fell behind 7-0 before showing some signs of life. Chicago State registered a three spot in the top of the third after the 'Lopes scored three in the first and four in the second. For the Cougars in the third, junior Jared Patterson (Ventura, Calif./Buena) tripled with one out and scored on an RBI by junior Evan Davis (Sterling, Ill./Sterling). Junior Chase Matheson (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) followed with a double which scored Davis. Junior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) then singled to score Matheson.

The Cougars added single runs in the fourth and the sixth innings. In the fourth, junior Robert Swenson (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) earned his first home run in a CSU uniform. His shot went over the right center field wall. In the sixth, sophomore Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) doubled to knock in freshman Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood).

The 'Lopes put the contest away with six runs in the seventh. Aranda Humberto had four hits for the 'Lopes.

Chicago State starter junior Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) (1-5) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) in 1.2 innings. Grand Canyon starter Coley Bruns (5-0) went all 7.0 innings to pick up the win.

"We didn't play well again today," Chicago State head coach Steve Joslyn said. "Pitching and defense let us down. The defense is on me so we'll get back this week and go over some bunt coverages to keep improving. We hit the ball okay but Grand Canyon is a good team with a high baseball IQ. They are well coached and are going to do well in the WAC this year. This was our first road WAC experience so we'll learn from it and move on."

Of the Cougars' seven hits, five went for extra bases. Swenson finished with two hits.

The Cougars fall to 9-13 (0-3 WAC). Grand Canyon improves to 14-11 (5-1 WAC). The Cougars welcome UW-Milwaukee to campus on Tuesday for a non-conference game with the Panthers at 3 p.m.
