LAKE CHARLES, La. – Chicago State baseball dropped a non-conference game to Missouri on Sunday (Feb. 16) afternoon 6-3. The neutral site game was played on the campus of McNeese State University. A pair of Missouri runs in the eighth inning opened up what was a one-run game for the majority of the contest.
"We would have liked better results this weekend but we're pleased with how we're progressing as a team," Chicago State head coach
Steve Joslyn said
The Tigers began the scoring with three runs in the first inning, each scoring after two outs. The big hit was a two-out two-RBI double by Dylan Kelly. CSU quickly responded with a run when junior
Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) opened the second inning with a solo home run to left field on a 1-2 count. It was the Cougars' first home run of the year.
Missouri came back with a run in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-1.
"Stro got into one today," Joslyn said. "The night before he had one we all thought was out but was knocked down in the jet stream."
Sophomore
Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) delivered a two-out two-RBI single in the top of the fourth to score junior catcher
Robert Swenson (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) and freshman
Stefan Panayiotou (Hillsboro, Ore./Hillsboro). It made the score 4-3. It stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth when Missouri added a pair of insurance runs.
Swenson finished with two singles and a run scored for the Cougars.
"Robert had a nice day at the plate but was also solid defensively and threw out a runner," Joslyn said.
Panayiotou's single in the fourth inning was his first collegiate hit. Senior
Nathan Poff (Sellersburg, Ind./New Albany)'s double in the sixth inning was Chicago State's only other extra base hit other than Stroschein's home run.
Junior
Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) took the loss in his first decision of the season. He allowed 11 hits and six runs with seven strikeouts over 7.2 innings. Ryan Phillips (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Tigers. He didn't allow a base runner in 1.2 innings after entering the game in the fifth inning.
"We spotted them three runs but then Andy got really strong and picked up seven strikeouts," Joslyn said.
Missouri moves to 2-1 while the Cougars fall to 0-3. Chicago State returns to play next weekend at Savannah State. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 4 p.m. ET.
