CHICAGO — Chicago State head men's soccer coach Trevor Banks has announced his staff for the upcoming 2021 season, the program's first full season in NCAA Division I.
"Having been by myself for a year, it's super-exciting to have a staff here," Banks said. "These three guys will all help us moving forward. The knowledge of a young fiery coach and two guys who have been in the game for a long time will be great additions to what we're doing here at Chicago State."
Norris Howze, Joshua Clark and Charlie Latshaw III all join Banks' staff as assistant coaches.
Norris Howze comes to Chicago State after a stint as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis, where he was hired in 2017.
"Having known Norris for a long time, it's exciting to finally work with him," Banks said. "His extensive experience at the Division I level and his worker mentality are some of the reasons why he's here. Our program will benefit tremendously with Norris on staff."
With Howze on staff, the Tigers reached new heights in 2019, as they won 10 matches for the first time since 2011. In addition, five players earned selections to all-conference teams.
Before joining Memphis, served as the director of operations at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
As the director of operations at UAB, Howze was responsible for the organization of travel and meals for the Blazers along with day-to-day office operations. While at UAB, Howze also had the opportunity to travel to the Netherlands and Italy, both as as a player and director of operations.
While playing for UAB from 2010-13 as defensive midfielder, Howze appeared in 69 games. In 2011, he was selected to the UAB 'Soccer For A Cure' Classic All-Tournament team for his role in helping the Blazers to the championship. Howze was also the teams Most Improved Player in 2011.
After his UAB run, Howze continued his playing career for two summers with the Birmingham Hammers, a team in the National Premier Soccer League, in 2015 and 2016.
He also served as the BUSA Academy coach in the spring of 2014, the Oak Mountain High School freshman head coach and assistant varsity coach in 2014 and 2015, and the Vestavia Academy coach in 2015 to 2017.
A native of Hoover, Ala., Howze was a four-year varsity starter at Hoover High School coached by Kris Keplinger. Coming into college, Howze was the No. 6 player in the South by TopDrawerSoccer.com. In 2009, he was named to the North-South All-Star contest and was an all-state and all-metro selection following his senior year.
Clark, a native of Cambridge, New Zealand, played at Aldershot Town F.C. in Aldershot, Hampshire, England before moving to America.
"Josh is a young, hungry coach with a fiery mentality," Banks said. "He's been with us for a few months now and has helped set a standard that is second-to-none. This program wouldn't be where it is right now without Josh's help. I'm excited to be a part of his journey and help him grow here at Chicago State."
In the U.S., Clark served as the inaugural captain at Murray State College (Tishomingo, Oklahoma), where he earned an Associate of Science degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. He then transferred to William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, where he was an integral part of the program's first conference title and national tournament appearance.
After his senior season, he remained as a graduate assistant, helping with recruiting and training session design. William Woods earned a No. 22 national ranking.
Clark then moved over to the University of Dayton, serving as an assistant coach in 2020 and the beginning of 2021, working with goalkeepers and defenders for a team that won the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.
Charlie Latshaw joins Chicago State for his first season as assistant coach after previously coaching at both Ancilla College in Donaldson, Indiana and Holy Cross College of Notre Dame, in Notre Dame, Indiana.
"Charlie and I have known each other for a long time, as we were college teammates," Banks said. "He brings something different to this staff, which I absolutely love. Charlie's knowledge of the game and his gritty attitude will be infectious within our group. I'm super excited to be starting this program alongside one of my closest friends."
Latshaw currently serves as the Technical Director at Liverpool International Academy in Illinois. Prior to his time with Liverpool, Latshaw spent seven years at Sockers FC Chicago and at the MLS NEXT Academy in Palatine, Illinois, where he served as a head coach both in the Boys and Girls Development Academy.
Previous coaching stops also include his role as the technical director for the Junior Irish Soccer Club in South Bend, Indiana, as well as a staff coach at the Cary Soccer Association in Cary, Illinois.
Latshaw graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2010, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Sport and Fitness Administration/Management.
Latshaw currently resides in Palatine, Illinois, where in his free time he enjoys cooking and taking care of his plants.
