Homewood, Ill.– The Chicago State men's tennis team fell to Valparaiso, 7-0 in it's home opener on Friday afternoon at the Homewood-Flossmor Racquet and Fitness Club.
At No. 1 singles,
Jakov Suler (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska Gimnazija) trailed the first set 4-1 early but battled back to make it a game, 4-3 before the players battled the remainder of the contest. Suler pulled the comeback, taking the first set 7-6 (6). Valparaiso's Ancona battled back to tie the match at 1-1 with a 6-1 win in the second set before a convincing 6-2 win to earn the victory.
Jesus Perez Plaza (Madrid, Spain/) also jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set at No. 2 singles before Valparaiso's Brian Pecya tied the set at 4-4, but Perez Plaza closed the set with a break to win 6-4. The second set went to Pecyna 7-6 (5) to tie the match at 1-1. The pair battled back and forth but ultimately the match went to Pecyna in the form of a third set tiebreaker which he won, 10-7.
The other matches were decided in straight sets but the Cougars had some promising play out of
Cody Wurzelbacher (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield) at No. 5 singles and
Pedja Kolaric (Birkenfeld, Germany/) at No. 6.
