SLU Outmatched Cougars in Weekend Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

SAINT LOUIS, MO-- The Chicago State Baseball team dropped all three games of their series this past weekend by scores of 7-3, 7-5, and 8-3. Despite the losses, the Cougars bats were lively throughout the weekend as CSU out hit Saint Louis in two of the three losses.

Game One (Friday, March 15)

The Cougars dropped the first game of the series to the Billikens by a score of 7-3. The Green and White started off the game on top after plating two men in the top of the 1st. The Billikens would take the lead soon after, however, after scoring one in the 1st and two in the 2nd.

Anthony Leedle (Clinton, Wis.) (1-2) took the loss on the mound after throwing 2.1 innings. Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich., Grand Blanc) and Breven Daugherity (Joliet, Ill., Joliet West) were the relievers, although Dylan Cumming spent the most time on the mound for the Cougars in the game as he tossed 4.2 innings. Dylan Cumming allowed just two runs and struck out a season high seven batters, and Breven Daugherity threw a scoreless inning.

The Cougars totaled eight hits in the game, with two of them coming from Zack Stockton (Stockton, Calif., Tokay). Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich., Northville), Matt Sullivan (Lake in the Hills, Ill., Huntley), and James Rosenhagen (Scottsdale, Ariz., Notre Dame Prep) each delivered an RBI. Zack Stockton was one of the main bright spots in the Cougars' offense, hitting 2-for-3 in the game. He shined in the field as well where he threw out three Billikens trying to steal.

Game Two (Saturday, March 16)

The Cougars dropped game two, 7-5. Heading into the 9th inning, CSU had trailed 7-1. A four run effort in the top of the 9th brought the game within two runs. Saint Louis scored the majority of their runs in the fourth inning, where they also scored four runs.

Brett Gregory (Lompoc, Calif., Cabrillo) (1-3) started the game and took the loss for the Cougars in game two. He lasted until the fifth inning as he tossed 4.2 innings. He surrendered eight hits, six runs, and struck out three over his innings of work. Blake Kaplan (Las Vegas, Nev., Sierra Vista) and Dean Youngblood (Melissa, Texas, Melissa) both did what they could to help the Cougars win, as they combined to toss three innings where neither of them surrendered a hit. Blake Kaplan threw two of the three scoreless innings, striking out one. Kyle Merkel (Los Angeles, Calif.) also struck out one over 0.1 innings.

The Cougars offense did its part in game two, providing 11 hits. Four CSU hitters had multi hit games as Daulton Ryans (Mishawaka, Ind., Mishawaka), Matt Sullivan (Lake in the Hills, Ill., Huntley), Gabriel Coburn (Windermere, Fla.), and Kilian Bloat (Liberty, N.Y.) each had two hits. Matt Sullivan (Lake in the Hills, Ill., Huntley) picked up his 12th and 13th RBIs in the game, while Kilian Bloat also had an RBI. James Rosenhagen (Scottsdale, Ariz., Notre Dame Prep) also picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Game Three (Sunday, March 17)

The Cougars suffered the biggest loss of the weekend when they lost by a score of 8-3. Although the Green and White were the first to trail in the game, they managed to even up the score at three in the top of the 4th. It did not last long, as SLU pulled ahead in the bottom of the third and didn't look back.

Vinnie Venturi (Pacifica, Calif.) (0-1) returned from injury to start on the mound for the Cougars as he tossed three innings in the loss. Vinnie Venturi had an efficient day on the bump, as he only allowed one walk and one earned run. Yunis Halim (Chicago, Ill., Oak Lawn) also spent three innings on the mound in the game, as he struck out two in his three innings of work. Joe Baier (Suamico, Wis., Bay Port) made his season debut after returning from injury, and he was able to strike out two in one inning of work. Calvin Peacock (Bartonville, Ill.) also struck out two over one scoreless inning

The Cougars were only able to record five hits in the loss. Andy Gaytan (Oak Forest, Ill.) put the Green and White on the board first with a home run over the right field fence in the 3rd inning. James Rosenhagen (Scottsdale, Ariz., Notre Dame Prep) was responsible for the other two runs, as he provided a game tying two out single that scored two and tied the game in the 3rd. Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich., Northville), Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa, Bettendorf), and Kilian Bloat (Liberty, N.Y.) had a hit each in the loss.
