Chicago State Travels to CSU Bakersfield for Key WAC Baseball Series

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball travels to the state of California this week for its final Western Athletic Conference series of the regular season at it takes on host CSU Bakersfield at Hardt Field in a three-game series with playoff implications.
 
The first game between the two teams will take place tomorrow night in a live broadcast on the WAC Digital Network with a start time of 8 p.m. Friday's second game is also slated to begin at 8 p.m. with the series finale being played on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
 
The Cougars and the Roadrunners are among four teams in the running for the sixth and final spot at next week's WAC Tournament, held in Mesa, Ariz., alongside Utah Valley and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
 
Chicago State heads to the Golden State sporting a season record of 12-39 after falling at Valparaiso, 3-2, in heartbreaking fashion yesterday. The Green and White are led by junior infielder Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) as he has produced team high numbers of 75 hits, 41 RBIs and eight home runs while posting a WAC-leading batting average of .387. Senior outfielder Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) ranks second on the team with a .322 batting average and leads the team with 16 doubles.
 
Senior right-hander Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) leads the Cougars' pitching corps with a 4-3 on the season, and freshman right-handed hurler Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) has produced 60 strikeouts over 71.1 innings of work, both team-leading numbers.
 
CSU Bakersfield enters the final week of the season with an 18-33 record after falling at UC Santa Barbara in 10 innings yesterday by a score of 6-5.
 
The Roadrunners are paced at the plate by senior catcher/outfielder Andrew Penner's batting average of .351, 72 hits and 29 runs scored. Junior catcher/first baseman Ryan Koch has produced 31 runs batted in, 10 doubles and four triples, and senior infielder Luis Martinez has belted a team-best five home runs.
 
CSUB's top pitcher is senior right-handed reliever Nathan Dewsnap as he has amassed team highs of 58.1 innings pitched, 56 strikeouts, five saves and a 3.55 earned run average.
 
The WAC Tournament will take place next week on May 23-27 from HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Ariz.
