Paciello Posts Big Day at the Plate in CSU’s Loss at Notre Dame

Senior Matt Paciello hit 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs tonight at Notre Dame
Box Score
CHICAGO – Senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) hit 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs for visiting Chicago State as it dropped an 18-4 non-conference decision to host Notre Dame tonight at Frank Eck Stadium.

The home team began the game with an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Alex Kerschner.

Chicago State got on the board in the top of the third when Paciello blasted a two-run home run to left field that also scored fellow senior Brandon Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) from third base to slice its deficit to 4-2. Eyring led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error. ND then added three runs in the bottom half of the third to hike its leading margin to 7-2.

Two more runs crossed the plate for the Fighting Irish to increase their advantage to 9-2 in the fourth inning.

Paciello struck again in the top of the fifth for the visitors after lining an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score fellow senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry), who reached base on a one-out walk two plays earlier, from second to pull within 9-3. Junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) scored from third base on a wild pitch after reaching base with a single to close CSU's deficit to 9-4. Notre Dame responded with another two-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to bring its lead to 11-4.

The Irish brought home three more runs in the sixth inning which brought their lead to 14-4 and scored two runs in the seventh to increase their leading margin to 16-4. The scoring concluded for the home team with two runs in the eighth inning.

CSU also received top offensive efforts from Eyring and freshman Reggie Brock, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) as both players batted 2-for-4. Junior Edward Kang (Taoyuan, Taiwan/Pingzhen) (1-3) took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) on two hits in the first inning. Relief pitchers Joe Fitka (Anchorage, Alaska/Diamond) and Dean Youngblood (Melissa, Texas/Melissa) each threw scoreless efforts against the Fighting Irish.

Next up for the Cougars is a Western Athletic Conference weekend series at Sacramento State that begins Friday night on the WAC Digital Network at 8 p.m., central time.
