CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball returns to Cougar Stadium this weekend to battle Western Athletic Conference foe Utah Valley in a three-game conference series.
 
Both teams open the series tomorrow afternoon with a start time of 3 p.m. followed by a Saturday afternoon showdown at 3 p.m. The final game of the series will be on Sunday starting at 12 p.m.
 
CSU enters the weekend with a season record of 5-23 after a hard fought non-conference road contest at Missouri on Tuesday before falling by a score of 5-3 with three players recording multiple hits, including senior outfielder Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) going 2-for-3 and scored twice.
 
Paciello is posting a team-leading .321 batting average with a team-best eight doubles. Junior infielder Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) leads the Green and White with team highs of 20 RBI, three home runs and two triples. Senior utility player Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) ranks first on the CSU's pitching staff in earned run average (3.58) and is tied with freshman right hander Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) for the team's strikeout lead (37).
 
Utah Valley comes to Chicago with a record of 12-22 on the season with a 4-8 conference record after dropping all three contests of last weekend's home WAC series versus CSU Bakersfield at UCCU Ballpark.
 
Senior right fielder Jackson Overlund leads UVU in hitting with a .329 batting average in addition to posting team highs of 46 hits, 12 doubles, five home runs, three triples and 31 RBI on the year. The Wolverines' pitching staff is paced by senior right handers Jake Mayer (3.73 ERA, 59 strikeouts, 60.1 innings pitched) and Kaden Schimitt (3-2, 3.92 ERA, 32 strikeouts).
 
Following the UVU series, CSU heads to neighboring Indiana for a non-conference mid-week game against host Purdue in West Lafayette with a start time of 4 p.m.
