CSU’s Matt Cox Added to Johnny Bench Award Watch List

Junior Matt Cox was added to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List today as a nominee for the nation's top catcher.
CHICAGO – Chicago State University junior baseball player Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) has been added to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List today. The Johnny Bench Award is given annual to the nation's top collegiate catcher.
 
Cox was among 15 catchers that added to the list for the award by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission and he is one of three nominees from schools in the state of Illinois.
 
For the season, Cox is hitting .237 with 11 runs batted in and three doubles while producing a .988 fielding percentage behind the plate. He ranks second on the team with 146 defensive putouts.
 
To date, 112 catchers have been nominated for the award. The list will be updated to include candidates nominated by their school until April 30, 2018. The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, whom will be announced May 16, 2018. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 4, 2018. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 21st Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 28, 2018.
 
Bench's career honors include: National League Rookie of the Year (1968); National League Most Valuable Player (1970, 1972); World Series Most Valuable Player (1976); 14-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner. In 1980, he set an endurance record by catching 100-plus games for 13 consecutive seasons. Bench was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in January 1989 with the fourth highest percentage of total votes cast.
 
The Cougars will return to action on tomorrow at Cougar Stadium as they kick off a three-game Western Athletic Conference series against Utah Valley beginning at 3 p.m.
