Cougars Drop Second Contest of WAC Series at Northern Colorado

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Chicago State baseball team dropped the second game of its Western Athletic Conference series against host Northern Colorado this afternoon at Rawlings Field falling by a score of 9-1.
 
An RBI single from Jack Pauley in the first inning brought home Alex Kiel for an early 1-0 lead for the Bears. Dean Lawson increased the home team's lead to 2-0 in the second inning with an RBI double. Two more runs crossed the plate in the third inning for NC which included an RBI double from Brent Minnick to bring its leading margin to 4-0.
 
The Bears scored twice again in the sixth on an RBI single by Nick Tanner and Kiel's RBI sacrifice fly to left field which brought their advantage to 6-0. Tyler Yamaguchi posted a two-RBI single as part of a three-run rally in the seventh as UNC increased its lead to 9-0.
 
In the ninth inning, the Green and White got on the board when senior Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) lined a two-out RBI single through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded that brought home junior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) from third base for the final margin.
 
Vanitvelt went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run for CSU, while fellow juniors Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) and Matt Sullivan (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Huntley) also batted 2-for-4 on the day. Junior starting pitcher Grant Trower (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in 2.2 innings of work and took the loss, and sophomore reliever Joe Baier (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) recorded five strikeouts over 5.1 innings thrown.
 
UNC was led offensively by Matt Burkhart's 3-for-3 effort and scoring three times, while Lawson and Yamaguchi each batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Aaron Hamilton (4-5) captured the win for the Bears as he went seven innings and gave up seven hits while posting four strikeouts.
 
The Cougars finish off the season tomorrow afternoon at Jackson Field in Greeley, Colo., with the first pitch set for 1 p.m.
