Jacob Northrup batted 2-for-3 that included hitting his third home run of the season Saturday vs. NM State
Box Score
CHICAGO – Junior Jacob Northrup (Phoenix, Ariz./Sahuaro) paced Chicago State's offense in Saturday's Western Athletic Conference game at Cougar Stadium against New Mexico State by hitting 2-for-3 with three RBIs in a 10-4 defeat.

The first three innings served as a scoreless pitcher's duel between CSU starter Grant Trower (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and NM State's Marcel Renteria before junior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) broke the tie for the Green and White in the fourth inning with an RBI ground-rule double to left center which scored fellow junior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) from second base.

A four-run rally in the sixth inning that included a three-run homer from Marcus Still propelled the visitors to a 4-1 lead. The Aggies added four more runs in the top of the seventh to hike their advantage to 8-1, highlighted by Austin Botello's three-RBI triple that went down the right field line.

Northrup blasted a two-run single up the middle to score senior Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) and junior Matt Sullivan (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Huntley) in the bottom half of the seventh to slice the Cougars' deficit to 8-3.

After NMSU tallied two runs in the top of the ninth to move its lead to 10-3, Northrup finished off his day by belting his third home run of the season with a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the inning to close the scoring.

Sullivan and Vanitvelt each went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run for CSU (11-37, 7-13), while Trower (2-6) allowed eight runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings of work.

The Aggies were led by Tristen Carranza as he hit 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. The pitching win went to Renteria (7-2), who allowed a run on six hits over six innings thrown while also posting six strikeouts.

Both teams will conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 12 noon in CSU's final home contest of the season. Before the game, the Cougars will honor their senior members in a pregame senior day ceremony.
