Baseball Opens Final WAC Home Series against NM State

CHICAGO – The Chicago State baseball team opened its final Western Athletic Conference home series Friday evening against New Mexico State, but the visiting Aggies claimed a 12-1 victory through seven innings at Cougar Stadium.

The Green and White scored an early 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from junior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) that went to right center that brought home fellow classmate Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West ), who opened the inning with a double to left field.

NM State evened the score at 1-1 in the third inning after Brent Sakurai hit a one-out double to left center before coming home two plays later on a balk.

The Aggies followed that with a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings, a run in the sixth and six runs in the seventh to end the scoring.

The Cougars were led by senior Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) as he went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate. Redshirt junior Brad Moore (Mount Prospect, Ill./Hersey) suffered the loss for CSU after allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits over six innings of work to go along with a season-best seven strikeouts.

Sakurai hit 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, two stolen bases, scored three times and drove in three runs for NM State (31-19, 15-4). Kyle Bradish recorded 10 strikeouts to capture the victory on the mound while giving up a run on five hits in eight innings thrown.

The second game of this weekend's series will take place on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
