CSU Bakersfield Defeat CSU in WAC Weekend Series Finale

CHICAGO – Visiting CSU Bakersfield closed out this weekend's Western Athletic Conference series here at Cougar Stadium this afternoon by defeating host Chicago State by a 12-1 margin.
 
CSU tallied a 1-0 lead in the first inning when redshirt senior Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a double from junior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) before scoring on an RBI groundout from junior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) on the following play.
 
The visitors gained a 2-1 advantage on a two-run single from Cole Valletta in the second inning and added four runs in the third to bring its leading margin to 6-1 that included a two-RBI single by Ryan Grotjohn.
 
Max Carter lined a two-RBI double during a three-run rally in the fourth inning that hiked CSUB's advantage to 9-1.
 
Russell finished the day hitting 1-for-3 with a double and scored once for the Green and White on the day. Junior starter Grant Trower (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) gave up six runs on six hits in 2.2 innings thrown to take the loss while posting two strikeouts and two walks. Junior reliever Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) allowed two hits in three innings of relief.
 
CSUB was led by Grotjohn's 4-for-5 hitting output with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Aaron Charles picked up the win after posting three strikeouts in four innings of work in addition to allowing a run on five hits.
 
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday afternoon with a mid-week home contest against Milwaukee with a start time of 3 p.m.
