Baseball Drops 3-0 Decision to CSU Bakersfield

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball team opened its Western Athletic Conference weekend series Friday by dropping a 3-0 decision to visiting CSU Bakersfield at Cougar Stadium.
 
The game started out as a scoreless pitcher's duel between CSU's Jake Perkins (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) and CSUB's Max Carter that lasted six innings before the Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead in the seventh on Jake Ortega's RBI single that scored Cole Valletta from third base.
 
Andrew Penner hit a two-run single to left center in the ninth inning for the visitors to close out the scoring.
 
Junior Matt Sullivan (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Huntley) finished the game hitting 2-for-3 to lead the Cougars and fellow classmate Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West ) went 2-for-4 at the plate. Perkins (2-3) took the loss despite allowing a run on seven hits, but struck out five batters and walked three in seven innings of work.
 
CSUB was led offensively by David Metzgar, who hit 3-for-5 with a double, while Valletta finished the day going 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice. Carter (5-1) posted the complete-game win after posting six strikeouts and scattering six hits.
 
Both teams will continue the series on Saturday afternoon with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
