Grand Canyon Defeats Chicago State, 12-2, to Even WAC Weekend Series

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball was defeated by visiting Grand Canyon by a score of 12-2 in seven innings on Friday afternoon at Cougar Stadium to even this weekend's Western Athletic Conference series at one game apiece.

The 'Lopes broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with a five-run rally to gain a 5-0 advantage with the highlight coming in the form of a two-RBI double by Garrison Schwartz.

An RBI double by senior Rick Salazar (Bloomingdale, Ill./Plainfield South) and an RBI sacrifice fly from junior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) gave the Green and White a pair of runs to slice their deficit to 5-2 in the fourth inning.

GCU added four runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the seventh inning to close out the scoring.

Salazar batted 1-for-2 with an RBI and junior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) also hit 1-for-2 for CSU. Senior Jake Perkins (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) took the loss after giving up nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits in six innings of work.

Schwartz posted a 3-for-4 day offensively with three doubles and three RBIs to lead Grand Canyon, while Zach Malis hit 2-for-3 and scored twice. Jake Repavich (4-3) claimed the win despite allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings thrown, but posted five strikeouts.

The series finale between both teams will be on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m.
