Baseball Falls to Ball State in Snowbird Classic, 8-6

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Chicago State baseball team continues its weekend here at the Snowbird Classic by falling to Ball State, 8-6, today at the North Charlotte Regional Park.
 
The Cardinals posted three runs in the first inning for an early 3-0 lead that was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Matt Eppers to left field and added a run in the second to hike their advantage to 4-0.
 
In the fourth inning, junior Matt Sullivan (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Huntley) reached second base on an infield error and later scored on an RBI single from sophomore Joe Baier (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port) to pull the Green and White within 4-1.
 
Eppers blasted an RBI single to center field which brought home Caleb Stayton in the fifth inning to increase Ball State's lead to 5-1. A two-run double from Jeff Riedel was part of a three-run seventh inning for BSU to bring its leading margin at 8-1.
 
The Cougars posted a big inning in the eighth with five runs as Baier recorded a two-RBI double and sophomore Malik Carpenter (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) hit a two-run single to slice their deficit to 8-6. The Cardinals held off CSU in the final inning to close the game.
 
Baier paced Chicago State by going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, while senior Josh Perkins (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) fell to 0-2 on the year after giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits in two innings thrown.
 
Ball State was led offensively by Eppers as he finished the game hitting 3-for-4 and drove home four runs. Colin Brickhouse captured the win while allowing an unearned run on six hits in five innings of work.
 
The Green and White will battle Northeastern tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. to close out the weekend.
