Cougars Lose 4-2 at CSU Bakersfield in 2016 Road Finale

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Chicago State baseball lost its final road contest of the season here this afternoon to host CSU Bakersfield by a score of 4-2 in the Western Athletic Conference series finale at Hardt Field.

The home team took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning after Mahlik Jones blasted an RBI single up the middle to score Ryan Grotjohn.

An RBI sacrifice fly from senior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake Ill./Central) to center field plated freshman Cody Grosse (Joliet, Ill./West) from third to help the visitors even the score at 1-1 in the fourth.

CSUB responded with a pair of runs in the fifth with an RBI triple from Dustin Frailey and another RBI single by Jones to claim a 3-1 lead and later hiked its advantage to 4-1 on Grotjohn's run-scoring single in the sixth.

The Cougars scored their final run in the ninth inning when redshirt junior Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field which brought home sophomore Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry), who singled three plays earlier, from third.

Senior Chris Hipchen (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) led Chicago State's offense by hitting 3-for-4, while Freund went 2-for-4 at the plate. Senior Dillion Engle (Milwaukee, Wis./Nathan Hale) took the loss after giving up all four runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings thrown in addition to posting three strikeouts.

Grotjohn finished the game hitting 2-for-3 and scored twice to lead CSU Bakersfield. Garrett Nimmo (2-5) allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits to go along with four strikeouts over seven relief innings to capture the win.

The Green and White return to Cougar Stadium for its final WAC series of the season against Utah Valley beginning Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
