Baseball Comeback Falls Short in 6-5 Defeat at CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Chicago State baseball came back from a deficit during Friday night's Western Athletic Conference series opener at CSU Bakersfield but that comeback fell short as it lost a heartbreaking 6-5 decision.

After the first four innings went scoreless, the home team struck first with three runs in the fifth on a triple from David Metzgar to capture a 3-0 advantage. The Roadrunners added two runs in the seventh to hike their leading margin to 5-0.

CSU got on the board in a big way in the top of the ninth with a five-run rally to tie the score at 5-5 that was highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry). Sophomore Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West ) and senior David Wright (Desoto, Texas/Desoto) also recorded RBI singles during the rally. CSUB then scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth when Metzgar hit an RBI single to bring home Dustin Frailey, who lined a two-out triple two plays earlier.

Chicago State was led offensively by junior Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood), who finished the day going 2-for-5 and scored a run. Thomas (2-1) took the loss on the mound after giving up a run on two hits in the ninth inning.

Metzgar led CSUB at the plate by hitting 3-for-5 with five RBIs, while Frailey finished 2-for-2 and scored two runs. Chance Gusbeth (2-3) earned the win after allowing a hit in one-third of an inning thrown with a strikeout and a walk.

Both teams will battle in the second game of the series at Hardt Field on Saturday evening at 6 p.m., Pacific Time (8 p.m., Central Time).
