Cougars Post 4-2 Win at Grand Canyon to Even WAC Weekend Series

PHOENIX – Chicago State baseball evened its weekend Western Athletic Conference series against host Grand Canyon Saturday night at Brazell Stadium with a 4-2 victory.
 
The first three innings served as a starting pitcher's duel between CSU junior Justin Wyant (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and Grand Canyon's Cameron Brendel until the fourth inning when the visitors erupted for four unanswered runs to claim a 4-0 advantage that included an RBI single by junior Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood).
 
The Cougars held on to the shutout until the eighth inning after Garrison Schwartz blasted a two-RBI home run off Wyant to right field for the final margin.
 
Hunt and senior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake Ill./Central) each hit 1-for-4 and scored a run for the Green and White at the plate. Wyant (3-8) tallied five strikeouts and walked one over eight innings thrown to claim the win despite allowing two runs on four hits. Sophomore Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West ) threw a scoreless relief inning in the ninth and struck out two batters en route to posting his third save of the season.
 
Schwartz batted 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead GCU, while Brendel (4-3) took the loss after allowing four runs (none earned) on six hits in eight innings thrown in addition to equaling Wyant with five strikeouts.
 
Both teams will conclude the series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m., Mountain Time (1 p.m., Central Time).
