Cougars Post Dramatic 5-4 Home Victory over Northern Colorado

Cody Grosse brought home the game-winning run with an RBI triple Saturday against Northern Colorado

CHICAGO – Freshman Cody Grosse (Joliet, Ill./West) blasted an RBI triple to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the Chicago State baseball team capture a dramatic 5-4 Western Athletic Conference victory over Northern Colorado here on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Stadium.

Grosse hit the triple off Bear reliever Justin Mulvaney with two outs that brought home sophomore Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West ), who singled on the previous play, for the winning run.

CSU opened the scoring in the first inning by scoring three runs that was highlighted by a two-RBI single by sophomore Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry).

Northern Colorado tallied its first run in the fifth inning after Corey Nakakura hit an RBI single to bring home Dan Reese.

The Bears scored again in the top of the sixth on Dean Lawson's RBI groundout to pull within 3-2, but an RBI sacrifice fly from freshman Malik Carpenter (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) plated junior Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) to hike the home team's leading margin back to 4-2.

Ryan Yamane hit a triple off CSU starting pitcher Justin Wyant (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) down the right field line to score a pair of runs that evened the game at 4-4 in the top of the ninth setting up Grosse's heroics.

Senior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake Ill./Central) led the Green and White offensively by hitting a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and a stolen base, while Hunt went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Wyant (2-8) posted five strikeouts and walked one to earn the complete-game victory despite allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Reese led UNC by hitting 2-for-4 at the plate and scored a run. Mulvaney (0-2) notched three strikeouts and a walk in four innings thrown while giving up two runs on four hits to take the loss.

The Cougars conclude this weekend's series with the Bears on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
