Valpo captured an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double from Daniel Delaney before senior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake Ill./Central) blasted a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first to give the home team a 2-1 advantage.

The Crusaders then increased its lead to 6-2 after adding three runs in the second inning and two runs in the top of the fourth. The Green and White tallied three runs of its own in the bottom half of the fourth to slice its deficit to 6-5, highlighted by a two-RBI infield single by freshman Joe Baier (Suamico, Wis./Bay Port).

A RBI single from Freund went to center field and scored freshman Cody Grosse (Joliet, Ill./West) from second base to even the score for the home team at 6-6 in the fifth inning.

After scoring a run in the eighth to reclaim the lead at 7-6, the visitors closed out the game by scoring three runs in the ninth inning for the final margin.

Baier and Gertonson each hit 1-for-4 with two RBIs for CSU (7-30). Freshman Jamary McKinney (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) took the loss after giving up a run on two hits in 1.2 innings of relief.

Valpo (14-17) was led by Jake Hanson's 3-for-4 offensive output with three runs scored, while Nolan Lodden went 3-for-6 with a double, a triple and drove in five runs. Scott Jerge struck out three batters and allowed a hit in 1.1 relief innings to earn the win.
