Baseball Drops Close 12-10 Decision to Northwestern to Open Five-Game Homestand

CHICAGO - Chicago State baseball opened its five-game homestand Tuesday night with a close 12-10 non-conference defeat to Northwestern at Cougar Stadium.

The visitors opened the game with a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Joe Hoscheit lined an RBI double. NU then scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings before bringing in an additional four runs in the sixth to hike its leading margin to 9-0.

CSU got on the board in the seventh inning with a four-run rally which included RBI singles from freshman Cody Grosse (Joliet, Ill./West) and junior Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) to slice its deficit to 9-4.

After the Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the eight to bring its lead to 12-4, the Green and White brought home another run in the bottom half of the inning when Grosse singled through the left side to score freshman Malik Carpenter (Chicago, Ill./Mt. Carmel) to pull within 12-5.

The Cougars continued their comeback in the ninth by scoring five runs, including a two-run triple from Grosse, to close within 12-10 with runners on second and third with one out, but the Wildcats got the last two outs for the final margin.

Grosse finished the game hitting 3-for-6 with four RBIs and scored twice to lead Chicago State (7-29). Hunt went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Josh Willis (Omaha, Neb.) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work in additon to recording six strikeouts and walking four.

Ben Dickey led NU (10-) offensively by hitting 3-for-4 with a stolen base and scored a run, while Jake Shieber went 2-for-4 with four runs scored. Pete Hofman (1-3) threw a scoreless first inning to claim the win.

CSU continues its homestand tomorrow afternoon with a non-conference contest against Valparaiso with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
