Cougars Fall to Seattle in WAC Series Opener, 6-3

Mattingly Romanin led CSU with a 3-for-5 effort Friday at Seattle

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Chicago State baseball fell to host Seattle by a score of 6-3 in its final Western Athletic Conference road series of the season Friday evening at Bannerwood Park.

Sophomore Sanford Hunt (Chicago, IL/Kenwood) lined an RBI single to right center in the top of the second that scored junior Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake IL/Central) to give the Green and White a 1-0 lead, but Seattle evened the score in the bottom half of the inning when Dalton Hurd brought home Sean Sutton after being hit by a pitch.

The Redhawks scored three runs in the fourth inning to gain a 4-1 lead, highlighted by Hurd's RBI ground-rule double. SU increased its leading margin to 5-1 in the fifth inning after Landon Cray hit an RBI sacrifice fly.

Gertonson came back in the sixth with an RBI double to left field that scored senior Matt Schmidt (Dundee, IL/Jacobs) to pull CSU within 6-2.

In the ninth inning, senior Quintin Alexander (Chicago, IL/Brooks) scored freshman Cody Freund (McHenry, IL/McHenry) from third with an RBI single to close out the scoring.

Senior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) led Chicago State by going 3-for-5 at the plate. Alexander, Gertonson and Hunt each finished the game hitting 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Senior Eric Hall (Oakville, ONT/Oakville Trafalgar) took the loss on the mound after allowing four runs on four hits in 3.2 innings thrown, while fellow senior Dane Mehring (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) held the Redhawks to three hits in four relief innings.

Both teams will play the second game of this weekend's series from Courter Field on the campus of Bellevue College tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m., central time.
