Box Score
CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball lost a 9-2 decision to Sacramento State in the finale of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series this afternoon at Cougar Stadium.

The Hornets opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Chris Lewis belted a two-run single to center field off CSU starting pitcher Tyler Abbott (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal). In the second inning, the visitors increased its leading margin to 4-0 with Nathan Lukes recording an RBI groundout and Scotty Burcham bringing home another run via a single to right center.

CSU got on the board in the third inning with a pair of runs to slice its deficit to 4-2. Senior Quentin Alexander started the rally with a double to left field and later scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Cody Freund (McHenry, IL/McHenry). On the next play, senior Matt Schmidt (Dundee, IL/Jacobs) scored fellow classmate Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) from third with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field.

Burcham's RBI single highlighted a two-run fourth inning for Sacramento State as it hiked its lead to 6-2 and the lead later grew by one at 7-2 in the fifth thanks to Devin Lehman's RBI fielder's choice. Two more runs crossed the plate for the Hornets in the seventh inning to close out the scoring.

Alexander, Freund, Romanin, Schmidt all recorded singles on the offensive end for CSU. Senior Tyler Abbott (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits while posting five strikeouts in four innings thrown. Fellow senior Aveeno Nasiloski (Hammond, Ind./Gavit) and freshman Zach Thomas (Joliet, IL/Joliet West ) each threw a scoreless inning in relief.

The Cougars return to action this Wednesday evening (May 6) when they head to Joliet for a non-conference game against Milwaukee at Silver Cross Field with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
