CHICAGO –
Chicago State University senior baseball players Matt Schmidt (Dundee, IL/Jacobs) and Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) were recognized today by the Western Athletic Conference for their outstanding play this season by receiving all-conference honors.

Schmidt was named First Team All-WAC after leading the Cougars with a .324 batting average, three triples and a .988 fielding percentage. He was tops on the team in hitting (.408), slugging percentage (.592) and on-base percentage (.467) in conference play.

Schmidt posted a season-best five hits on five different occasions, scored a season-high three runs against New Mexico State on April 26th and tallied a season-best 16 putouts at Texas-Pan American on April 18th.

"Matt had a great all-around season both offensively and defensively for us at first base," CSU head coach Steve Joslyn said. He made some great pickoffs to save runs and was one of the hottest hitters in the WAC during the second half of the season. This is a well-deserved honor for him and for the Chicago State program."

Romanin managed to finish off his collegiate career in grand fashion by earning his third consecutive all-conference honor after garnering Second Team All-WAC accolades for the second year in a row. He batted .313 on the year while leading the Green and White in several categories, including hits (61), home runs (seven), RBIs (39), slugging percentage (.492), and defensive assists (145) which also ranked him among the WAC individual leaders.

Romanin batted .304 against WAC opponents with six doubles, two home runs and a triple to go along with 16 RBI and a .441 slugging percentage. He recorded his best game of the season against Roosevelt at home on April 21st in which he went a perfect 3-for-3 with career highs of three home runs and seven RBI.

"Mattingly set the school's all-time hits record this year and led us in nearly every offensive category. He is a leader on and off the field for us," added Joslyn. "It is very impressive to be a repeat All-WAC selection in a group of extraordinary gifted players. He is a true competitor and the result of hard work and dedication."

Northern Colorado outfielder Jensen Park was named WAC Player of the Year, while outfielder Garrison Schwartz of Grand Canyon received WAC Newcomer of the Year honors. Bakersfield received a pair of awards as head coach Bill Kernen and senior right-handed pitcher Hayden Carter earned WAC Coach and Pitcher of the Year accolades.
