Baseball Drops 15-10 Decision to Bakersfield on Senior Day

The Cougars honored their senior players in a pregame ceremony before facing off against Bakersfield in their 2015 season finale.

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball finished off its 2015 slate Saturday afternoon with a 15-10 defeat to Western Athletic Conference foe CSU Bakersfield at Cougar Stadium on Senior Day.

The Cougars honored their senior players Tyler Abbott (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal), Quintin Alexander (Chicago, IL/Brooks), Evan Davis (Sterling, IL/Sterling), Eric Hall (Oakville, ONT/Oakville Trafalgar), Nick Kostalek (Huntley, IL/Huntley), Chase Matheson (McHenry, IL/McHenry), Ean McNeal (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier), Dane Mehring (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier), Aveeno Nasiloski (Hammond, Ind./Gavit), Nathan Parade de la Feraude (Surrey, B.C./Enver Creek Secondary), Jared Patteson, Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame), Joseph Ross, Matt Schmidt (Dundee, IL/Jacobs), Dylan Sterrett (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier), Jordan Strochein and Robert Swenson (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) in a pregame ceremony.

Bakersfield gained a 3-0 lead early in the top of the first that was highlighted by an RBI single from Max Carter, but the Green and White scored their first run in the bottom half of the inning to pull within 3-1 when Schmidt lined an RBI double down the right field line that scored Romanin from second base.

David Metzgar helped increase CSUB's leading margin to 4-1 in the second inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field which brought home Soloman Williams from third.

The Cougars struck again in the third with a five-run rally to capture their first lead of the contest at 6-4 which included Davis hitting a single to right center to score a pair of runners. Stroschein registered an RBI walk to bring home a run and freshman Cody Freund (McHenry, IL/McHenry) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field to plate another run.

An RBI triple by Ryan Grotjohn in the fifth inning and a run-scoring single from Carter in the top of the sixth helped the visitors even the score at 6-6. The Green and White tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth with RBI singles from Schmidt, Stroschein and Patterson to recapture the lead at 10-6.

The Roadrunners scored five runs in the seventh to regain the lead at 11-10 with Logan Trowbridge hitting a two-RBI double to highlight the inning. CSUB closed out the game by scoring four additional runs in the eighth and ninth innings for the final margin.

Davis, Patterson, Romanin and Schmidt each recorded three hits to lead CSU in their final collegiate game, while Swenson hit a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate.

Kostalek allowed two runs (none earned) on two hits in one-third of an inning thrown in relief and dropped to 1-3 with the loss.

The Cougars finished the season with a record of 13-40-1 that included a 6-19-1 mark in WAC play.
