Hunt Posts Three Hits as CSU Baseball Falls to Bakersfield

Sophomore Sanford Hunt hit 3-for-4 to lead CSU in Friday's WAC contest against Bakersfield

CHICAGO – Sophomore Sanford Hunt (Chicago, IL/Kenwood) hit 3-for-4 at the plate to lead host Chicago State baseball during Friday's Western Athletic Conference contest with Bakersfield at Cougar Stadium, but the Roadrunners produced several big innings en route to claiming a 13-4 victory.

The visitors gained an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Max Carter led off with a single, advanced to second on a throwing error and moved to third on a balk before scoring on Ryan Grotjohn's RBI sacrifice fly to center field.

Six more runs crossed the plate for Bakersfield in the fourth inning that helped increase its advantage to 7-0 which included RBI singles from Carter and Garrett Pierce.

CSU got on the board in the fifth inning with a pair of runs to close the gap with CSUB to five runs at 7-2 that began with Hunt and senior Robert Swenson (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) hitting singles on back-to-back plays. Swenson scored thanks to an RBI single by freshman Matt Sullivan (Lake in the Hills, IL/Huntley) and Hunt later scored on an RBI fielder's choice from freshman Cody Freund (McHenry, IL/McHenry).

A two-RBI single from senior Chase Matheson (McHenry, IL/McHenry) that scored fellow classmates Nathan Parade de la Feraude (Surrey, B.C./Enver Creek Secondary) and Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) pulled the Cougars to within 7-4 in the seventh inning, but Bakersfield added six runs in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the scoring.

In addition to Hunt, Matheson finished the game hitting 2-for-4 for CSU, while senior Eric Hall (Oakville, ONT/Oakville Trafalgar) took the loss on the mound after allowing eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits and struck out four batters in 7.1 innings of work.

CSU closes out the season on Saturday afternoon with the series finale against Bakersfield with the first pitch set for 12 p.m. The Cougars will honor their senior players in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.
