Baseball Drops Extra-Inning Heartbreaker at Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Chicago State baseball was in a tight mid-week contest Tuesday afternoon against rival Valparaiso at Emory G. Bauer Field before the home team captured an 11-inning thriller by a 2-1 margin.

The game opened up as a pitcher's duel between CSU senior hurler Ean McNeal (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) and VU's Connor Kaucic for five innings until the Crusaders scored first in the sixth inning when Daniel Delaney lined an RBI sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Jeff Edwards from third for a 1-0 lead.

Senior Chase Matheson (McHenry, IL/McHenry) opened the seventh inning for the Green and White with a single and moved to third a single from senior Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) before crossing home plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by fellow senior Robert Swenson (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) to even the score at 1-1.

The score stayed the same until the 11th when Chad Jacob got on base via a walk and scored three plays later on Spencer Mahoney's single to left center to end the game for Valparaiso (17-21).

Matheson, Stroschein, fellow seniors Matt Schmidt (Dundee, IL/Jacobs) and Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame), and freshman Matt Sullivan (Lake in the Hills, IL/Huntley) all recorded hits for Chicago State (11-31-1). Graduate student Dylan Sterrett (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier) saw his record fall to 1-1 after allowing a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning thrown, while McNeal gave up a run on six scattered hits to go along with three strikeouts in six innings of work.

CSU is back in action tomorrow afternoon with another mid-week road game at Northwestern with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
