Box Score
CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball broke a close game by scoring six unanswered runs Friday evening as it captured a 9-2 win over visiting New Mexico State in the Western Athletic Conference series opener at Cougar Stadium.

The visitors took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Derek Umpres hit an RBI single up the middle that brought home Brent Hermanussen, who reached base via a double off CSU starting pitcher Eric Hall (Oakville, ONT/Oakville Trafalgar). The Cougars responded with three runs in the bottom of the second for a 3-1 advantage thanks to a two-run triple from senior Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) and an RBI single by senior Quentin Alexander.

New Mexico State (6-31-1, 3-12-1 WAC) sliced its deficit to 3-2 in the third inning after Daniel Johnson led off with a single and scored three plays later on an RBI sacrifice fly by Cameron Haskins to center field.

The Green and White (10-19-1, 3-11-1 WAC) added three additional runs in the fifth inning to hike its lead to 6-2. Senior Jared Patterson (Ventura, Calif./Buena) hit an RBI single that scored Stroschein from second and fellow senior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) lined a two-RBI double just two plays later to bring home freshman Cody Freund (McHenry, IL/McHenry) and Patterson.

Two more runs scored in the sixth inning to bring CSU's advantage at 8-2 that was highlighted by a solo home run by Schmidt. An RBI groundout by Stroschein that plated Schmidt in the seventh inning closed out the scoring for the Cougars.

Schmidt, Stroschein and Freund each finished the game hitting 2-for-4 for Chicago State. Hall (3-4) posted his second complete game victory of the season after recording five strikeouts and allowing only two runs on nine hits.

CSU is back in action tomorrow afternoon with the second game of this weekend's WAC series against NMSU with a start time of 3 p.m.
