Box Score 2 Charleston, S.C. - The Cougars dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Charleston Southern Buccaneers at CSU Ballpark in Charleston S.C.
Game 1 -
Tyler Abbott (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) scattered one hit and struck out seven as the Cougars had a 6 run lead slip from their grasp. Despite out hitting the Bucaneers 13-8, the Cougars were lost the contest 10-8.
In the fourth inning,
Julian Russell (Chicago, IL/Gordon Tech) hit his first career home run over the left center wall to drive in
Jared Patterson (Ventura, Calif./Buena), extending the Cougar lead to 4-0.
Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) and
Robert Swenson (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) both went 3-5 in the first game.
Dane Mehring (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) (0-1) took the loss for the Cougars in relief.
Game 2 - Making his Cougar debut,
Dillion Engle (Milwaukee, WI/Nathan Hale) was able to hold the Buccaneers to 0 runs through the first 4 innings as the Cougars weren't able to hang on to an early 5-0 lead. In what turned out to be a slug fest, where both teams pounded out 14 hits, Charleston Southern squeaked past the Cougars 12-11.
Jared Patterson (Ventura, Calif./Buena) and
Evan Davis (Sterling, IL/Sterling) both tallied 3 hits to lead the Cougars.
Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame),
Andy Gertonson (Crystal Lake IL/Central), and
Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) each registered 2 hits in Game 2. Romanin led the Cougars with 4 RBIs.
Zach Thomas (Joliet, IL/Joliet West ) (0-1) took the lost for the Cougars despite striking out 4 over 2.1 innings.
Cougars are back in action Friday February 20th in Atlanta GA as they begin a three game set with Nebraska-Omaha.
