CHICAGO – Three runs in each the second and eighth innings were all the scoring the Northern Colorado Bears needed on Sunday (May 11) afternoon to defeat the Chicago State Cougars 6-4 at Cougar Stadium. Sunday was Senior Day for Chicago State as Jake Peltz (Alliance, Neb./Alliance), Joelh Calixto (Chicago, Ill./Guerin) and Nathan Poff (Sellersburg, Ind./New Albany) were honored in a pregame ceremony.

Northern Colorado's three-run second inning was highlighted by Bryan Tibbitt's solo home run. The Cougars didn't get on the board until the seventh. Calixto earned a Senior Day RBI by knocking in junior Robert Swenson (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) from second on a two-out single.

The Bears used three consecutive two-out hits in the eighth to put up their second three spot. It was 6-1 score going to the bottom of the eighth when the Cougars offense showed some life. Junior Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) singled to left field to knock in junior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame). Freshman Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) followed with a walk before Swenson singled to left to knock in junior Matt Schmidt (Dundee, Ill./Jacobs). Poff then sent a 3-2 pitch to center field for a sacrifice fly RBI, scoring Stroschein. It would be all the scoring for the Cougars in the inning and the game. Chicago State did put two runners on in the ninth but Stroschein popped up to end the game.

Romanin, Stroschein and Swenson each had two hits for the Cougars.

Starter Eric Hall (Oakville, ONT/Oakville Trafalgar) allowed six runs over 7.2 innings. He took the loss and is now 3-5. Northern Colorado starter Josh Tinnon went 6.2, allowing just an unearned run. He is now 4-10. Yan Fortin picked up the save for Northern Colorado, his second of the season.

Northern Colorado improves to 10-40 (4-20 WAC). Chicago State falls to 15-35 (3-18 WAC). The Cougars will close out the 2014 campaign next week with a Thursday-Saturday series at New Mexico State.
