HTML Box ScoreCHICAGO – Chicago State baseball fell to Notre Dame 6-1 on Tuesday (April 8) evening at Cougar Stadium in a non-conference contest. The visit by the Fighting Irish was Notre Dame's first ever to Chicago State.
The Cougars were the first on the scoreboard with a single run in the first inning. Junior
Jared Patterson (Ventura, Calif./Buena) reached on an error and then stole second. He advanced to third on a ground out. Patterson then came around to score on a throwing error by third baseman Kyle Fiala on a ground ball off the bat of junior
Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar). The inning ended when Stroschein tried to advance on the error but was thrown out at second.
Notre Dame was quick to tie the game up with a run the next half inning. Fiala led the frame off with a hit by pitch and then scored on a ground out.
The teams traded zeros until the sixth inning when the Fighting Irish broke through against Chicago State starter
Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central). Notre Dame opened the inning with five consecutive hits and chased Wellwerts from the game with five total runs in the inning.

Jerry Silva (Chicago, Ill./Holy Trinity),
Joe Ross (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) and Patterson pen didn't give up a run the rest of the 3.1 innings. However Notre Dame starting pitcher Nick McCarty was dealing for the Fighting Irish. He threw a complete game with two hits, one run and a walk allowed. McCarty's record is now 2-6. Wellwerts is now 1-6 for the Cougars.
Notre Dame improves to 11-20. The Cougars are now 9-18. Chicago State plays at UIC tomorrow (Wednesday, April 9) in a 6 p.m. start against the Flames.
