Northwestern Sweeps Baseball Doubleheader From CSU 6-1 & 4-2

Freshman Sanford Hunt had an RBI in game two.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHICAGO – Northwestern swept a pair of seven inning contests from Chicago State on Wednesday (April 16) evening at Cougar Stadium by scores of 6-1 and 4-2.

Game One: Northwestern 6, Chicago State 1 (HTML Box Score / PDF Box Score)
The Wildcats scored an unearned run in the fourth and then added another in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. The Cougars best scoring chance came in the bottom of the fifth. CSU pushed across a run on a single to left field by junior Jared Patterson (Ventura, Calif./Buena). His single scored junior Robert Swenson (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) from third. It would be Chicago State's only run of the game after junior Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) was thrown out at home and junior Chase Matheson (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) bounced into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

The Wildcats put the game away with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Patterson recorded two hits and an RBI. Swenson added two hits and a run.

Nick Friar earned the win for Northwestern. He is now 1-0 after allowing one run on five hits over 5.0 innings. Junior Nick Kostalek (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) was given the loss. He is now 2-2. He allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits in five innings.

Game Two: Northwestern 4, Chicago State 2 (HTML Box Score / PDF Box Score)
The Cougars were the first on the scoreboard in game two thanks to a solo run in the first. Patterson walked and was sacrificed to second. It looked like he was going to be stranded after junior Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) hit a once bouncer to second. However Northwestern second baseman Reid Hunter made the decision to stay back on the play and not charge it. Taking it on a bounce resulted in a close play at first and Hunter throwing the ball away. Stroschein earned an infield single for the play and Patterson came around to score on the throwing error.

The Chicago State lead didn't last long. A pair of unearned runs in the second gave Northwestern a 2-1 advantage. The Cougars tied the game in the fourth. Chicago State loaded the bases with one out. Freshman Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) entered the game as a pinch hitter. He hit a slow grounder to the right side that scored Stroschein to tie the game.

But just like when the Cougars scored their first run, Northwestern came back the next half inning with two tallies of their own.  Walker Moses and Scott Heelan each had RBI for the Wildcats in the fifth. The Cougars didn't record a hit over the final three innings, clinching the win for Northwestern.

Chicago State starter Dane Mehring (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) took the loss. His record is now 0-6. He allowed four runs (two earned) over 4.2 innings. Chicago State starter Dan Tyson picked up the win (3-2) after giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits over 4.0 innings. Reed Mason earned the save for Northwestern, his first of the year.

Romanin finished with two hits for the Cougars in the contest.

Chicago State falls to 10-23 on the year. Northwestern improves to 8-24. The Cougars return to Western Athletic Conference play on Friday (April 18) with North Dakota. First pitch at Cougar Stadium on Friday is set for 6 p.m. CT.
