NATCHITOCHES, La. – Northwestern State baseball recorded two more hits than Chicago State on Saturday (March 8) evening but the Demons made the most of them in Northwestern State's 7-2 victory over the Cougars.

Of the Demons' seven hits, three were doubles. Northwestern State left just three on base while the Cougars stranded five runners.

The Demons opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Cougars got one back the next half inning on an RBI single by freshman Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) to score junior Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar).

It was a 3-1 Northwestern State lead when the Demons opened the game up thanks to a four spot in the fifth inning. A Chase Daughdrill two-RBI double was the big hit in the inning.

The Cougars scratched across their second and final run of the game in the seventh inning. A Hunt sacrifice fly brought in junior Chase Matheson (McHenry, Ill./McHenry).

"It was a stinker of a game from us," Chicago State head coach Steve Joslyn said. "We didn't play well from the get go and didn't do much of anything well other than playing okay defensively."

Junior Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) started and took the loss to drop his record to 1-3. He allowed six runs in 4.1 innings. Demons starter Adam Oller picked up the win to move his record to 2-0. He gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings.

The Cougars fall to 5-7. Northwestern State is now 7-7. The Cougars play McNeese State on Sunday at noon in a neutral site contest on Northwestern State's campus.
