SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior
Jordan Stroschein (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) knocked in three of Chicago State's five runs in the Cougars' 7-5 loss at Savannah State on Sunday (Feb. 23).
Early offense hasn't been a problem for the Cougars as for the fifth time in six games Chicago State was the first on the scoreboard. On Sunday it was a two-spot in the top of the first. Juniors
Chase Matheson (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) and Stroschein both had RBI singles in the inning. Savannah State plated a run in the bottom of the first to answer back.
Stroschein knocked in single runs in the third and fifth to make the score 4-2. It didn't stay a two-run lead for long as the Tigers pushed two across in the fifth to knot up the score.
The Cougars briefly took the lead again in the eighth. Freshman
Sanford Hunt (Chicago, Ill./Kenwood) singled with one out to score senior
Joelh Calixto (Chicago, Ill./Guerin). Calixto pinch ran for junior
Robert Swenson (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) after Swenson tripled.
The Cougars were six outs from a victory but gave up a three spot to the Tigers in the bottom half of the eighth.
Junior
Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) suffered the loss for the Cougars. He is now 0-2. Wellwerts gave up all seven runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts over 7.1 innings. Savannah State's Eric Ricks threw the final 1.2 innings and picked up the win to move his record to 1-0.
CSU finished with 12 hits but Swenson's triple was CSU's only extra base hit of the day. Chicago State left 10 on base, the third time this year the Cougars have stranded 10 or more in a game.
"We are just leaving too many on base," Chicago State head coach
Steve Joslyn said. "We left 10 out there and had double-digit hits again. We need to come up with timely hits. We will get there but it's a work in progress."
The Cougars fall to 1-5. Savannah State is now 3-4. Chicago State travels to Port Charlotte, Fla. Feb. 27-March 1 for four games. First up is a doubleheader with St. Bonaventure and Omaha on Thursday (Feb. 27).
