Chicago State Falls In GWC Opener To Northern Colorado

NEWARK, N.J.
– Eighth seeded Chicago State fell 13-1 (7 innings) to top seeded Northern Colorado on Tuesday (May 21) in the Cougars' first game of the 2013 Great West Conference Baseball Tournament. Chicago State will play Utah Valley on Wednesday (May 22) in an elimination game. The contest will start at 9 a.m. ET. The tournament is being hosted by NJIT at Riverfront Stadium.
 
Northern Colorado scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a quick 3-0 advantage.
 
The Cougars got one run back in the top of the second. Sophomore Aveeno Nasiloski (Hammond, Ind./Gavit) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Joelh Calixto (Chicago, Ill./Guerin).
 
Northern Colorado made it a 6-1 game with three more runs in the bottom of the third. A 3-run home run by Nick Miller in the sixth then made it 9-1. The Bears ended the game with four runs in the seventh. The frame included a solo home run by Derek Baum and a 3-run home run by Jensen Park.
 
Junior Dylan Sterrett (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier) went 5.1 innings and was given the loss to drop his record to 1-11. Sterrett allowed nine runs (five earned).
 
Northern Colorado's Chris Hammer started and picked up the win. He is now 5-4. He allowed one run in seven innings.

The Cougars had a runner in each of the first six innings but stranded three men on second and one on third.
 
The loss drops Chicago State to 8-44. Northern Colorado improves to 30-22.
