NEWARK, N.J.  – Chicago State University baseball opens the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament on Tuesday (May 21) with an opening round contest against Northern Colorado at 12:15 p.m. ET. The Cougars are the No. 8 seed. Northern Colorado is the No. 1 seed in the double-elimination tournament. The event is being hosted by NJIT at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Northern Colorado took 3-of-4 from Chicago State when the two clubs met earlier this season. Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) earned the win and Aveeno Nasiloski (Hammond, Ind./Gavit) picked up the save in Chicago State's 7-4 win over Northern Colorado on April 7.

IN THE TOURNAMENT - The Cougars are 1-7 all-time in Great West Conference Tournament play. The Cougars' only win came last season in an 11-7 decision over NJIT.

KNOW WHEN TO GO - Eric O'Brien (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) is a perfect 11-of-11 in stolen base attempts.

MORE LIKE SOPHOMORE JUMP - Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central)' 4.54 ERA is nearly a 100 percent improvement from his 8.13 ERA during his freshman campaign in 2012. He threw 52.0 innings last season. Already in 2013 he has thrown 81.1 innings.

WRITE THEM IN PEN - Nathan Poff (Sellersburg, Ind./New Albany) (CF), Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) (SS) and Eric O'Brien (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) (LF/C) are the only three Cougars who have started all 51 games.

SUPER STERRETT - Dylan Sterrett (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier) is fourth in the GWC in innings pitched (84.1).

HOORAY FOR ERA - Chicago State enters the GWC Tournament with a 6.02 ERA. If the Cougars can finish the season in this range it would be the Cougars' best ERA since 1994 (5.45).

THE RIGHT DIRECTION - Opponents are hitting .302 off of Chicago State pitching this year. It is more than a 50 point improvement from last season's .354 opponent batting average.

EVERY DAY JERRY - Sophomore pitcher Jerry Silva (Chicago, Ill./Holy Trinity) leads the GWC in appearances (25).

OF LATE - Jerry Silva (Chicago, Ill./Holy Trinity) has allowed one earned run or less in seven of his last eight relief appearances.

FINISH WHAT YOU START - Andrew Wellwert's five complete games ranks eighth in the nation.
