CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball struck first against Northern Colorado on Saturday (April 6) with a pair of runs in the second inning. However the Bears scored eight straight runs to come back and defeat the Cougars 8-3 in the Great West Conference contest played at UIC's Les Miller Field.
Sophomore
Nathan Parade de la Feraude (Surrey, B.C./Enver Creek Secondary) and junior
Jake Peltz (Alliance, Neb./Alliance) each knocked in a run in the second inning . The Cougars would have liked to push a few more across as the Cougars left a pair of runners on base to end the frame.
“That needed to be a bigger inning for us, we left some runners out there and didn't maintain momentum into the next inning and gave the runs right back,” Chicago State head coach
Steve Joslyn said. “We need to be in a better situation where we can score multiple runs and clamp down on the defensive end.”
Northern Colorado's Nick Miller tied it up the next half inning with a two-run triple to right field. The Bears added a run in the fourth, three in the sixth and two in the ninth to pull away.
Chicago State freshman
William Munoz (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) hit his first career home run in the ninth inning as a pinch hitter.
The Cougars' bats were kept at bay thanks to Northern Colorado's Chris Hammer. He entered the game in the fourth inning and didn't allow a hit in 4.0 innings. He earned the win. Senior
James Tucker (Gary, Ind./Calumet) started for Chicago State and went 6.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs. Both Hammer and Tucker are now 2-2.
Northern Colorado improves to 11-13 (2-0 GWC). Chicago State falls to 3-18 (0-2 GWC). The two teams have a quick turnaround as they will play on Sunday at 10 a.m. in a doubleheader at Les Miller Field.
