CHICAGO – Junior
Dylan Sterrett (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier) tossed a one-run complete game for Chicago State baseball in the Cougars' 1-0 loss to Northern Colorado Friday (April 5) morning in the Great West Conference opener for both schools. The game was played at UIC's Les Miller Field.
The game's lone run came in the seventh. A pair of two-out walks with a runner already on base loaded the bags for the Bears' Jensen Park. He took a 1-0 pitch to left field to knock in Joe Love from third. The single run would hold up.
The Cougars' best chance to score came in the bottom of the eighth. Junior
Nathan Poff (Sellersburg, Ind./New Albany) singled with one out. It looked like he stole second three pitches but the Chicago State batter was called out on batter's interference, sending Poff back to first. Poff ended up getting to second anyway on a wild pitch with sophomore
Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) at the plate. Romanin followed with a single up the middle. Poff rounded third and was sent home to attempt to tie the game. However Poff was thrown out by NCU center fielder Dylan Banach on a close play at the plate.
In the ninth,
Jake Peltz (Alliance, Neb./Alliance) singled through the right side with one out. But a double play followed to end the game.
Romanin had three of the Cougars' six hits, including a double in the sixth inning.
Sterrett allowed six hits and the lone run with six strikeouts for the Cougars. His record is now 0-6. Josh Tinnon (2-1) went 7.2 innings, giving up four hits to pick up the win. Kevin William earned his fourth save of the year for the Bears.
Northern Colorado improves to 10-13 (1-0 GWC). Chicago State falls to 3-17 (0-1 GWC). The Cougars and Bears play the second game of the four-game series on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be held at UIC's Les Miller Field.
