Game Notes
Chicago State baseball (6-26, 3-9 Great West Conference) travels to Utah Valley (14-21, 5-3 GWC) to play the Wolverines April 26-28. The two teams have had a history as GWC members but they will continue to play next season as Utah Valley joins Chicago State in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Cougars took a pair of games from NYIT last weekend with Chicago State sweeping (5-2 and 3-1) a doubleheader on Saturday.
Dylan Sterrett (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier) and
Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) each gave up just three hits in a complete game effort. Only one of the six hits was for extra bases, a double. The pair is scheduled to take the ball in the first two games for Chicago State against Utah Valley.
The Wolverines haven't played since April 16 after seeing their series at North Dakota canceled due to weather.
THEY CALL HIM OB -
Eric O'Brien (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) is entering the Utah Valley series hitting .316 in GWC play.
WRITE THEM IN PEN -
Nathan Poff (Sellersburg, Ind./New Albany) (CF),
Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) (SS),
Eric O'Brien (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) (LF/C) and
Aveeno Nasiloski (Hammond, Ind./Gavit) (OF/P) are the only four Cougars who have started all 32 games.
WHEN WE LAST MET - Utah Valley defeated Chicago State 21-4, 16-10, 13-2 and 15-8 last year.
AWAY WE GO - Friday's game starts a stretch of 10 consecutive games away from home. Chicago State will play four teams in four different states and three different time zones during the stretch.
THREE'S COMPANY - Junior
Jake Peltz (Alliance, Neb./Alliance) has batted in every spot in the order this year except third.
SUPER STERRETT -
Dylan Sterrett (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier) is fourth in the GWC in innings pitched (58.1).
EVERY DAY JERRY - Sophomore pitcher
Jerry Silva (Chicago, Ill./Holy Trinity) leads the GWC in appearances (16).
HOORAY FOR ERA - Chicago State enters the Utah Valley series with a 6.21 ERA. If the Cougars can finish the season in that range it would be the Cougars' best ERA since 1995 (6.15).
NEW GROUND - Chicago State's new on-campus $2.5 million baseball stadium is still under construction. A snowy March and the wettest April in Chicago history has prevented the turf installation. However turf installation finally began on Wednesday (April 24).
