MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Chicago State baseball fell to Alabama State 11-2 on Saturday (Feb. 16) evening.

After being no-hit on Friday, the Cougars didn't have to wait long for their first hit on Saturday when leadoff hitter freshman Julian Russell (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) singled on the first pitch of the game to left field.

“It was a no-doubter for Julian's first collegiate hit,” Chicago State head coach Steve Joslyn said. “I think after that everyone in the dugout exhaled.”

The Hornets got on the board first with a lone run in the bottom of the first. Chicago State tied it at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Sophomore Aveeno Nasiloski (Hammond, Ind./Gavit) (Hammond, Ind./Gavit) doubled with one out to score sophomore Mattingly Romanin (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) (Burlington, ONT/Notre Dame) from first. The Cougars had runners on first and second with one out but the rally was halted by a double play, the second double play in four innings for the Cougars offense.

Alabama State opened up the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the sixth. The Cougars scored their second run of the game in the seventh. Freshman Ray Cekus (Chicago, Ill./Taft) (Chicago, Ill./Taft) singled in junior Dylan Sterrett (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier) (Chalmers, Ind./Frontier).

“We just couldn't make a defensive play to get out of the fourth,” Joslyn said. “We dropped a pop up and hesitated on a play. That half inning after we scored could have been a zero on the board. I don't think the final score indicated how competitive the game was.”

For the Hornets, Richard Gonzalez and Manny Rodriguez each had three RBI. Joseph Camacho (1-0) earned the win for ASU. He went seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs. Sophomore Andrew Wellwerts (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) went six innings to take the loss (0-1). Two of the five runs he gave up were unearned.

Alabama State is 2-0. Chicago State is 0-2. The two clubs will finish the three-game series on Sunday with a single contest at noon.
